First SKYWARN net of the summer storm season

category: Amateur Radio — David Stansbury @ 10:33 pm — permalink | pingback | RSS

This evening I participated in the Harford County SKYWARN net. We were under a severe thunderstorm warning and tornado watch for much of the evening. Fortunately we only experienced brief hail and the storm line passed quickly. Lee K4RLA did an outstanding job as NCS.

Participating in these nets is good practice. I used a 2 watt handheld radio and a homemade roll-up j-pole inside my house to communicate 12 miles to the Harford Emcomm repeater. It’s impressive how well the antenna design works! Things got a little noisy when the t-storms were overhead, but then everything gets noisy around lightning. Even my dog was whining (she hates thunder).

I’m sure there will be plenty more SKYWARN nets before the summer is over. The NWS is predicting an above average storm season.
