Internet Explorer 7 beta 2 - Yahoo messenger links stopped working
Two days ago (Mon, May 24) I installed Internet Explorer 7 beta 2 on my work computer. Here are a few observances:
- I downloaded the IE7 installer
- IE7 downloaded and installed additional updates
- It ran the malicious software removal tool
- IE7 core was installed
- Computer restarted
When the computer restarted the first thing I noticed was the loss of my printer driver! Not a good thing at all. So I reinstalled the driver software and proceeded. Interestingly, the custom name for the printer and it’s network sharing was still enabled. Funny.
I double clicked the IE7 icon and opened it up. I checked to turn on the anti-phishing filter. When the main window opened I found my home page (Google), toolbar (Google) and default search engine (Google) were intact. Running a URL in Windows Explorer or clicking a link in my email client (Thunderbird) still opened my default browser Firefox. No hijacks, I am pleased!
It wasn’t until today (Wed, May 24) that I noticed the links sent to me in Yahoo Messenger no longer worked. I can copy and paste of course, but clicking on the links did nothing. No windows opened anywhere. I am using the latest version of Y! messenger, 7.0.2.120. Perhaps there is an incompatibility that Yahoo needs to update?
I like to be able to click a link to open, so I uninstalled IE7 beta. After the required computer reboot I tried links again and they now work! All is well again. I will wait for future updates and try again.

Try out the Yahoo version of IE7. I’m sure that would fix the problem. I’m more of a Google person myself.

I’m having the same problem. I used to go to Ben’s Bargains.com to find awesome deals but now none of the links work anymore. Started after I reinstalled windows and did all the updates. Don’t know what update it was but it was working fine till I did the windows updates. Please help me get my links working again….
Comment by Rob — June 25, 2006 @ 10:59 pmI am having teh same link problems. I have xp pro and ie 7. I will save a link, such as cnn or whatever and sometimes it just stops working. it is not that big of a deal but it is very frustrating at times. any idea what is causing this? thanks

That should fix all your problems
Comment by Bob — November 27, 2007 @ 7:34 pmBob, have tried your solution — won’t work. I am running Vista and Y!M 8.1. Firefox and Opera, and still the links won’t work.
Comment by Criss.AC — January 31, 2008 @ 9:32 pmAnd not even now, after 3 months, the problem is still not solved. A couple of days ago they worked, for a couple of hours, but after this, they were again unclickable. Have googled around for any possible solution, have tried everything I’ve found, NOTHING worked… HEEEEEEELP!!!
Comment by Criss.AC — March 16, 2008 @ 3:36 pmI have not dug into the registry yet but the option is still very open. We have over a dozen Windows XP workstations at my job that I maintain. If (when) Windows needs to be reinstalled I follow a fairly logical procedure in order: Reinstall the OS and hardware drivers, download and install all Windows Updates including IE7, install the latest stable version of Firefox browser and Thunderbird email, then miscellaneous programs like Yahoo Messenger. With this routine, links sent via Yahoo Messenger always open Firefox, the default browser.
It seems the problem is more isolated to when one upgrades to IE7 with an already established, working computer. It’s like the upgrade process gives IE7 a “partial” default browser status. Firefox is still pinned on the Start menu as the browser, and emailed links, desktop shortcut links and Explorer web address entry still open Firefox, but something seems to get crossed up in Yahoo.
I haven’t been able to replicate the phenomena in programs other than Yahoo, so I feel this is something related to the Yahoo Messenger software like a registry setting.
Interestingly I have a similar problem with Windows Vista on my laptop. Firefox is the default web browser for most applications but links sent via Yahoo Messenger open IE7. If time permits I’ll dig thru the registry and if I find something awry I’ll definitely post it here.
