Internet Explorer 7 beta 2 - Yahoo messenger links stopped working

category: Computer & Security — David Stansbury @ 2:02 pm — permalink | pingback | RSS

Two days ago (Mon, May 24) I installed Internet Explorer 7 beta 2 on my work computer. Here are a few observances:

  • I downloaded the IE7 installer
  • IE7 downloaded and installed additional updates
  • It ran the malicious software removal tool
  • IE7 core was installed
  • Computer restarted

When the computer restarted the first thing I noticed was the loss of my printer driver! Not a good thing at all. So I reinstalled the driver software and proceeded. Interestingly, the custom name for the printer and it’s network sharing was still enabled. Funny.

I double clicked the IE7 icon and opened it up. I checked to turn on the anti-phishing filter. When the main window opened I found my home page (Google), toolbar (Google) and default search engine (Google) were intact. Running a URL in Windows Explorer or clicking a link in my email client (Thunderbird) still opened my default browser Firefox. No hijacks, I am pleased!

It wasn’t until today (Wed, May 24) that I noticed the links sent to me in Yahoo Messenger no longer worked. I can copy and paste of course, but clicking on the links did nothing. No windows opened anywhere. I am using the latest version of Y! messenger, 7.0.2.120. Perhaps there is an incompatibility that Yahoo needs to update?

I like to be able to click a link to open, so I uninstalled IE7 beta. After the required computer reboot I tried links again and they now work! All is well again. I will wait for future updates and try again.
