The Big A Power Supply

category: Amateur Radio — David Stansbury @ 11:49 pm — permalink | pingback | RSS

Yesterday I finalized my parts list for the Big A power supply and emailed it to our county RACES officer for review.

The concept for the Big A is simple - it is an uninterruptible power supply to maintain a constant source of power for our ham radios at the county EOC RACES room. Now the EOC has a massive, well-maintained backup generator system. But there may be a delay between mains loss, generator startup and power switching.  Plus power redundency is a very good thing to have in emergency communications, so a fail-safe battery backup system is desirable.

The Big A (officially stands for Big Amp ..) uninterruptible power supply is designed around the IOTA DLS-90 90 amp power supply / charger. This big dawg can provide plenty of 13.6V power for several radios transmitting simutaneously. With the IQ4 module it will double as a 3-stage charger for a 79 AH deep cycle, sealed AGM battery. Comprehensive power protection will be provided by 100 amp circuit breakers at both the battery and the DLS-90, negative and positive sides. Further protection will be provided by dual 12 position marine-grade fuse panels, located on both negative and positive sides. From there, power will be distributed to multiple operating positions, transceivers and accessories using 10 ga. zip cord and Anderson Powerpoles.

I may also be replacing the 20+ year old battery backup for the repeater systems. The 36 AH battery in it is old - ancient in battery years - and the charger is not entirely suitable for sealed AGM batteries.
